New Government: Nick And Dave Say ‘We’re United!’

I remember the BBC repeated the Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy TV series during the 1987 General Election campaign, when the joint SDP-Liberal Alliance leadership of David Owen and David Steel were increasingly not getting on with each other. I do not think Mark Wing-Davey’s portrayal of Zaphod Beeblebrox could have done the Alliance any favours and it collapsed in chaos shortly afterwards. However, many people claim the ‘Two Davids’ portrayal in Spitting Image also played its part.

‘Seriously David, no mere puppet show mocking serious world statesmen like myself can stop me- sorry us- forming the next Government.’ ‘Ooh, you’re right there David…’

Who says art can have no effect on politics?

  1. All the more reason to bring back Spitting Image as soon as possible.

While we’re at it, a rerun of Hitchhikers’ wouldn’t go amiss either… the BBC version, not that godforsaken Hollywood Schmollywood version.
